Canines are often used as a non-rodent model for studying the efficacy and safety of newly developed drugs and chemicals. This is mostly due to the similarities in their anatomical morphology and physiology compared to humans.

For research applications, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid allows for the sampling of innate (macrophages), cellular (B- and T-cells) and humoral (immunoglobulin) responses within the lung. In clinical applications, it is widely used for diagnostics work-up of infectious and non-infectious interstitial lung diseases.
