Serum is a blood-derived product. To prepare serum, blood is centrifuged to remove cellular components. If the blood is anti-coagulated, it will yield plasma containing fibrinogen and clotting factors. Coagulated blood (clotted blood) yields serum without fibrinogen or other clotting factors. Blood serum is a major source of biomarkers. As such, serum is often used for diagnostic testing and blood typing.
