The mouse has long been considered to be the premier mammalian model system for genetic research. Scientists have looked to the mouse because of its close genetic and physiological similarities to humans, as well as the ease with which its genome can be manipulated and analyzed.

Mouse models are available in a variety of unique inbred strains and genetically engineered mutants designed to study indications ranging from cancer and diabetes to alcoholism and even drug addiction.

Serum is a blood-derived product. To prepare serum, blood is centrifuged to remove cellular components. If the blood is anti-coagulated, it will yield plasma containing fibrinogen and clotting factors. Coagulated blood (clotted blood) yields serum without fibrinogen or other clotting factors. Blood serum is a major source of biomarkers.
