Porcine models are used in translational research and as surgical models. They are increasingly being used as the primary nonrodent species in preclinical toxicologic testing of pharmaceuticals.

Normal synovial fluid is clear, pale yellow, viscid, and does not clot. It is believed to have two main functions:  to aid in the nutrition of articular cartilage by serving to distribute nutritional substances, such as glucose, and to assist in the mechanical function of joints by lubrication of the articulating surfaces. In joint diseases, such as arthritis, the synovium of the joint is the primary place where inflammation occurs.
