The rat has been often used within the pharmaceutical industry as a standardized physiological and toxicological model. There is a wide range of strains supporting diverse scientific pursuits including mechanistic studies of human reproduction, breast cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular research, investigations into the effects of environmental agents and much more.

For research applications, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid allows for the sampling of innate (macrophages), cellular (B- and T-cells) and humoral (immunoglobulin) responses within the lung. In clinical applications, it is widely used for diagnotics work-up of infectious and non-infectious interstitial lung diseases.
